Here is a list of Otherkin. The source is a site called "witchcoldron.net"
------------------------

Otherkin are those humans who have been reborn with the soul of a mythological creature, either as supernaturals outright or as hosts to those creatures. As I am not perfectly knowdegeble about everything, this is is the sum of the rest of my knowledge of everything fey. :) Those that I do know a fair bit about will have their own pages following this one.
There are all sorts of them out there. Beannsidhe, dryads, elves, felines, greys, gryphons, leanan-sidhe, nymphs, pheonix, phooka, polymorphs, satyrs, silkies, unicorns, vampires, warriors. The lists go on and on! I think for every kind of legendary fey out there, there is someone somewhere who's been reborn with that soul.
For the sake of giving people a guide to what they are looking for, interested in, or in some cases have Awakened as, I will be listing as much as I know about the types of Kin I know of. This is not in alphabetical order, because I'm lazy.

Angel-kin are those who hear the song of the Spheres, and generally serve the Harmony of the Universe. Angels come from many religious groups, not just the Judeo-Christian, and not all of them may be the positive, white-light kind; some are considered "fallen", for whatever reason. Incarnate Celestials often Guardians, or sent to do important tasks; the "fallen" are often attempting to heal some form of imbalance or past error that they have made. Common abilities with Angel-kin include strong empathy, healing, and energy use. Celestials often feel "homesick", as they are away from the Source, the Universal font of energy.

Djinn (also know as Genies, Genii, Jinun, and sometimes just Demons) are mythologically half-human, half-demon from pre-Islamic times. The word djinn is neutral - it simply means spirit. Djinn are capable of choosing their own morality. They also seem to enjoy punishing humanity for wrongs done to themselves and others - diseases and disasters were often attributed to them in past days. Djinn-kin are fickle, mischevious and can do good or ill, should they wish. They are primarily drawn to air and fire, in any form. Djinn are one of the most misunderstood types of 'Kin.

Dryads and nymphs are woodland spirits; nymphs being the spirits of the wood itself and Dryads being fey that are tied to a tree by lifeforce. Nymphs are by legend a favorite chase of satyrs, and are slender and lithe. Dryads too, are so, but are tied to their trees and grow weaker the farther they stray from it. A Dryad whose tree is killed will dwindle away, if she does not die immediately from shock.

Elves (or faeries; this includes leanan-sidhe, beannsidhe or bean-nighes) are all creatures of magick. They can have varying nature, from kind and benevolent, shading through helpful, if shy, right down to mean, cruel and malevolent. Most are very beautiful and intelligent creatures, and innately magickal; it seems to come naturally to them. Tapered ears and slanted eyes of an unusual color are common, as are slender bodies. Some feel, like weres have phantom limbs of tails and muzzles, phantom wings - appendages that should be there, and feel as if they are, but aren't. Most elves/fey have a wicked sense of humour, and play the greatest pranks. Faerie and elves seem to have separated themselves online. There are myriad types of elves Awakened and about on the web these days: Eldari, Elenari, Dai'ari...the list could go on...and you'll find fae online as well.
On particular types of fae: Leanan-sidhe are fae that feed on the dreams of men, and give inspiration; they are the original Celtic vampire. Beannsidhe are better known as bansidhe or banshees, and have a precognitive gift that can sometimes bring great sorrow to them; bean-nighe are the Washers at the Ford, and not foresee death but show it to those who will die.

There are two feline races I've heard about, Cats of Kyphur, and Brinn/Brrrnn. I really don't know much about them other than the fact that they were very large cats, and both very intelligent races. Brinn/Brrrnn were apparently a nomadic desert people, competing with two other races for resources. As a race, they are still searching for something they have been looking for a long time.

Little is known of Greys, which is the way they like it. As I know it, the Greys are a race of Immortals who watch the world and record its' history, and that some of them know all that is, was, and shall come to pass on this plane. But in this plane they keep themselves and their knowledge hidden, so that it isn't misused and the balance disrupted. Not surprisingly, no-one knows what they look like, their habits, or their origins - but I would hazard a guess that they're very non-descript.

Gryphons are eagle or hawk-headed creatures, often with the body and hindlegs of a great cat, and the forelegs of the bird. I don't really know much about them or the people that have Awakened as them, so I won't say anything that might turn out to be wrong later. Also included (at least in my mind) in this "grouping" are dracogryphs, lupogryphs, vulpogryphs, and hippogryphs - parts dragon, wolf, fox and horse, respectively.

Again, little is known (at least by myself) of the phoenix. These firebirds are mentioned in Mesopotamian cultures, and the Egyptians spoke of them, but little is known of them as Otherkin. As a spirit guide, which I have experienced, they are creatures of intense passion and fierceness, and apparently fearless. There is also an odd serenity about them. Update (thanks to Aragorn): Phoenix-kin are fearless because fear is a limitation, and limitations frustrate them immensely. They are also quite flirtatious, and some males can be quite territorial. His last point on phoenix-kin was despite their free-spirited nature, there is a deep seriousness inside that they seldom reveal.

Phooka are trickster fey from the British Isles and Ireland; legend held they took the form of large birds, rabbits and small black ponies. I think, myself, they could take other forms as well. The would often appear to a tired traveller at the side of the road and offer them a ride home, and then run swiftly across countryside and dale, carrying them far away from their destination. At the end of their ride, the traveller was tossed into a river, lake or pond; some darker natured phooka carried their riders into the water and drowned them. Clever, quick, never totally honest, the phooka is always out for amusement and pranks. I don't personally know what they prefer for hosts appearance, or their magickal talents, besides shapeshifting. I often wonder if they're some relative of the were.

Polymorphs are probably one of the most difficult races to describe - if you can think of it, it can probably look like that. As their name indicates, they are capable of taking the look, aspects or total shape of an individual. This can include their astral forms as well; they can mimic an energy signature exactly. I have also heard this race called chameleons. Astrally, they look (to me) like glittering myst with eyes that is constantly in motion within itself. Physically they may change constantlyl eye color may change, and facial shape, etc., depending on who is around them. They are clever and quick to learn, and because of their abilities have a talent for hiding. Some struggle with self-identity, in the face of being able to be whatever they desire.

Satyrs are those lustful creatures of yore, the goat-legged wild ones who were given to music and desire and dancing and feasting, all for the sake of pleasure. I've heard it said they are always the party animal, rather hedonistic about life, and do have a taste for nymphs. I've also heard from various sources that they're only male, but I don't know. They seem to have a pleasant, enjoyable side, and a darker nature which seems to be lust and pleasure at any cost, even if it is hurting someone in the process. Again, I don't know about physical features in hosts, or anything about their history.

Selkies are fey that were said to live off the coasts of Ireland and Scotland; they were beautiful men and women with gentle black or grey eyes in human form that could take the form of seals. To catch a selkie maiden, men stole their seal-skins while they were bathing in human form and locked them away. Those so caught were usually compliant to their fate, but if given the chance to recover their skin they went back to the sea and never returned to their human husbands who had tricked them. In hosts, they prefer dark or grey-eyed humans with pale skin and dark hair. They love to be near water, and may have been those children impossible to get out of the bathtub.

Unicorns, like dragons, are creatures that dwell on the astral plane in these times. Some have decided to reincarnate into human hosts, but they are less common than some types of fey. Many Otherkin who have Awakened unicorn feel the horn constantly, and have a need for pure water nearby, and open space. They often have pure, clear blue or violet eyes, and dislike eating things that are harmful to the self. Their hair is usually light colored, and long and silky. Magick of natural healing come easily to them, and they are often drawn to wands.

Vampires of legends are all horrible fanged fiends of the night, mindless undead creatures who need blood to survive and thrive on cruelty. They live forever, cannot cross running water, are killed with a stake or sunlight and sleep in coffins on native soil. Vampires in reality can be immortal or mortal. They can be killed the same as you or I, and many, if not most, walk in the light of sun. Some of them are sensitive to it, but it doesn't kill them. Certainly the majority of them I know have been born mortal, and Awakened a vampire. Vampires feed on something they call pranic energy, which is a form of magickal energy, and can be found in blood, crystals, and various other sources. Some also will take energy directly from a human source, tapping into their psychic lifeforce, or psi-feeding. These vampires are known as psychic vampires. Vampires come from all countries and races.

Warriors, like Mages, are more of a subclass that a race of their own; all races may have some members who are Warriors. These Otherkin are the strongest and fastest warriors of all Kin; they have all of their individual racial talents, as well as being gifted with extraordinary strength, speed, endurance, skill and tactics. Such children who are born with the Warrior's Heart are often very athletic, and excel at sports. After Awakening, the call of the road often pulls them, and the new Warrior often travels extently, finding new ways of honing their combat skills. Eventually, in a process that I haven't fully come to understand yet, the Warrior is called to serve someone, a Mage, a Vampire, a Lord....it varies. They will then defend those people for the rest of their term, for reasons known only to them. I have only known them to abort their duties when their code of ethics have been violated.

Weres are human beings who have a deep, spiritual connection to a specific animal, or, in some cases, two or more animals. This goes deeper than simple admiration, definitely deeper than "hey, that's kinda nifty, I'm like that." It goes in a slightly different direction than totemism; you can call it deeper if you want. To an extent, weres believe they are the animal; to what extent varies with the individual. Quite often weres will act like their animal, but it would be a mistake to call this "acting"... it ends up feeling closer to just "being yourself" than anything else. Weres have (usually inherent) personality traits that reflect their animal. Weres usually have a strong sense of belonging in wild places; outdoors is home, and being outdoors is very satisfying. By the same token, being in places that are crowded, or overbuilt, or that have had their natural ecosystem destroyed, usually make weres feel out of place, at the least. Weres may bear a resemblance to their animal(s), but not always, and sometimes manifest behaviors like their animals as well.

More about the fae.

Faeries are Magickal folk living in forest trees in a world parallel to our own. They don't like to be seen by mortals and can become invisible when humans are nearby. Faeries love to dance in the moonlight, their Faery circles leave trails of light, glowing flowers, and mushroom rings. If you find a ring of mushrooms or toadstools in the forest, you have discovered a favorite dancing place of the Faeries. Never lie to the Fey. This is one of the most wicked of things to do. Never tell false stories about them and whatever you do, if you do happen upon one, be completely honest! Faeries love music and to dance to those hypnotic and beautiful sounds. Faeries are extremely fine musicians- it is said that when someone is daydreaming they are in fact entranced by the Magickal music of the Fey.

The most obvious portals into the world of Faery are all around us in the world of nature. There are herbs and plants that we can call sacred to the Fae because they share a particular affinity with Faery Realms, but it is important to remember that all of nature is sacred to them. Their lives are inseparably, powerfully, and poetically connected with Mother Earth. The understanding of this deep connection is their most valuable gift for humanity.

THE FAE:
BANSHEE
The Banshee is solitary and exceptionally beautiful. She is much feared as her wails prophesize the death of someone nearby. The Banshee is the harbinger of upcoming doom to her mortal kindred.
BOGEYMAN
The Bogeyman only exists thru the collection of one's fears. Small positive thoughts will forever banish him.
BROWNIES
Brownies are very small Faeries who live near or with humans. They do their work at night and value their privacy. Brownies chase mean spirits from the home.
DARK FAERY
She rules over darkness, shadows, and the human dead. She is a force of nature; in light there is darkness, in darkness there is light.
ELVES
Elves are small and are great Magickal beings. They are kind and beneficial to humans. Elves are solitary and they hate cats.
FAERY GODMOTHER
The Faery Godmother brings special gifts to the newborn. She can bring golden apples, crystal, a silver spoon, a lucky star.
GNOMES
The Gnome is an elemental spirit living underground. Gnomes are associated with the earth.
MISCHIEF FAERY
This Faery, although naked, has an unusual fondness for clothes. He will loosen buttons, unzip zippers, untie shoelaces, etc.
PIXIE
Pixies are mischievous trixters. These tiny Faery folk enjoy leading travelers astray.
SYLPH
The Sylph is a fragment of the soul of the earth in Faery form, living in the timeless zone.

Medicinal uses

Several types of Salvia are used medicinally:

aromatic varieties (usually strongly scented leaves, also used as herbs)

non-aromatic varieties (not considered medicinal, but many still have a scent)

Chia sages

Divinorum (Diviner's sage) is drug used for spiritual and recreational purposes.

Aromatic sages

The aromatic sages strengthen the lungs and can be used in teas or tinctures to prevent coughs. Less aromatic species of Salvia are run-of-the-mill mint-family anti-inflammatories, which means that they can be used for pretty much any infection or inflammation, and will give at least some relief.

Common sage (Salvia officinalis) drunk as a cold tea will stop sweating, while the same tea drunk hot will produce sweating. Cold and hot teas will also either stop or enhance milk production. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy and medicine.

White sage (Salvia apiana) is a very strong general anti-inflammatory, used as tea or tincture. The tincture has a very nice scent and can be used as a perfume. This species is the famous whitesage of smudge sticks.

Pineapple sage (Salvia elegans, old: S. rutilans) is a tender perennial with pineapple-scented leaves. Medicinally, this is perhaps closest to the scented geraniums, a sweet-smelling Pelargonium species.

Red sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is used medicinally in Traditional Chinese medicine.

Chia sages. The seeds of these species are used as bulk laxatives, much like the seeds of Psyllium (Plantago spp.) or linseed. Chia has been important in the diet of desert Indians. It is still used for its mucilaginous qualities by Mexican natives.

Diviner's sage (Salvia divinorum) also called Yerba de la Pastora or sometimes just Salvia, is a plant that differs from all the other sages. It is a Mexican visionary herb and there is some evidence it is a true cultivar. It is known to have strong psychoactive properties.

FAVORITE PLANTS AND HERBS OF THE FAE

Mistletoe, Foxglove, Jasmine, Primrose, Cowslip, Tulip, Straw, Strawberries, Dates, and Poinsettias.

Apple - The bark of apple trees or the fruits themselves have the power to transport a true-hearted seeker to the Otherworld. Burn the bark as an offering to the Good Folk on Midsummer's night. Also used in Faery love spells.
Bluebells - Said to attract Faeries to dance in your garden.
Clover - A sacred Faery plant, clovers of all kinds will attract them. Lay seven grains of wheat on a four-leafed clover to see the Faery.
Elderberry - Used to make Faery wine, these berries can be burned on a fire to invite the Good Folk to a gathering. Make a homemade brew of Elderberry Wine and you are sure to have some thirsty visitors. It is said that if a human drinks the wine, she will be able to see the Faery. If a human should drink Elderberry wine from the same goblet as a Faery being, he will be able to see them forever after.
Elecampagne - Also known as Elfswort, this root can be scattered around the home to attract the Sidhe. It can be added to any Magick or spell to invoke Faery blessing.
Foxglove - The source of the modern heart drug Digitalis, Foxglove can have seriously dangerous results if taken internally. DO NOT INGEST! Instead, plant Foxglove near your front door to invite the Faery in. Put a dried sprig of Foxglove in a talisman to keep you surrounded in Faery light. Heather - Heather is said to ignite Faery passions and open portals between their world and our own.
Lilac - The sweet scent is said to draw Sprites to your garden.
Mistletoe - The most sacred herb of the Druids, Mistletoe is a Magickal activator. In Faery spells, use a dash of Mistletoe taken on Summer Solstice to empower your workings with Faery Magick.
Peony - Peony seeds were once used to protect children from Faeries. A garland of the seeds were placed around the child's neck to keep them safe from kidnapping. In this day and age, with faery contact so drastically diminished, I doubt that anyone would want to don this Faery banishing herb unless they were living smack dab in the middle of a circle of crazed Pillywiggins.
Poppies - Said to invoke the Faery into your dreams.
Primrose - When planted in a garden or hung dried on the front door, primroses will attract the company of Faeries. If you have them growing under your care, do not let them die! The Faery will be deeply offended by your carelessness.
Roses - Roses attract the Faery to a garden. Their sweet scent will lure elemental spirits to take up residence close by. Roses can be used in Faery love spells. When performing the spell, sprinkle rose petals under your feet and dance softly upon them while asking the Faery for their blessing on your Magick.
Thyme - Wearing thyme will increase your ability to see the Sidhe. Sprinkle it at the base of your door, and on window sills to invite the Faery to enter your home.

FAE TREES
Elder - Elder is said to offer protection to the Faeries from negative spirits.
Hawthorn - Hawthorn, also known as Witches' Tree, is one part of the sacred triad of trees that are said to be sacred to the Faery. Oak, Ash, and Thorn, when growing naturally together, create a place where it is easy to see the Fey. Hawthorns were once believed to be the transformed bodies of Witches, who had shapeshifted into tree form. It is more likely that the spirit seen in the Hawthorn was that of a Tree Faery.
Oak - Legend tells us that "Faery folks are in the oaks". Oak trees are believed to provide safe havens and homes for many varieties of Faery.

5 points - The Pentagram, the man(human) star:
Also called the pentacle. The upright form is a good luck symbol to the Hebrews, and the upside down one a bad luck symbol.

Pentacle: Another name fot the five sided star.

The Five Pointed Pentagram, as well as the many variations of it, symbolize life and the unending circle or wheel of life. Each point of the star represents an element. The Circle around the star represents the God-Goddess; it refracts and reflects all light, bringing to the wearer total intelligence, universal wisdom and protection.

6 Points - The Hexagram, Star of David
In alchemy, the upright triangle represents fire, and the upside-down triangle is the symbol for water. Together they symbolize the unity of opposites. The hexagram is seen in the Great Seal of Solomon, and this symbol is often used in Ceremonial Magic. It's also a common symbol in Judaism, as there was a 6-pointed star on the shield that David carried to battle Goliath. The number 6 represents balance and beauty.

6 Points - Unicursal Hexagram
A variation on the more traditional 6-pointed star above. This symbol is attributed to Aleister Crowley, who redesigned the standard hexagram to create this symbol that could be drawn in one continuous motion (rather than the interlocking triangles).

7 Points - The Septagram, Septacle, Fairy Star, Elfin Star, or Elf-star.
It is also called a Heptagram.
This symbol is gaining popularity, though it is still less common that the others mentioned above. The number 7 represents magic and the spiritual realms. It's often associated with Fairies and Elves (hence the name).

8 Points - The Octogram
This symbol is more often just called an 8 pointed star, rather than an octogram. 8 represents completeness and the regenerative cycle (also seen in the 8 Sabbaths of the Pagan year.)

~The Salvia divinorum story~

For a number of years some people have been exploring the highlands of southern Mexico in a study of the role played by hallucinogenic mushrooms in the religious life of the Indians. They began by visiting the Sierra Mazateca in 1953, in the northernmost part of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Little was known about the herb, Salvia divinorum, or how it works on the brain and what its longterm effects might be. But word of its existence is spreading through e-mail chains and Web sites praising its potential, which has caught the attention of the American Drug Enforcement Agency.

~Salvinorin A

The diterpene salvinorin A from Salvia divinorum (Epling and Jativa-M), in doses of 200-500 µg(0.2-0.5mg) produces effects which are subjectively identical to those experienced when the whole herb is orally ingested. Salvinorin A is effectively deactivated.

~Salvia officinalis

Leathery, gray-green leaves on slightly woody stems up to 2 feet high. The stems don't always support the plant; it can get floppy. It produces attractive spikes of blue-purple (only occasionally white) flowers.

~Growing Salvia divinorum

Salvia d is fairly easy to grow once you get the hang of it. When it is in its vegetative phase, it can grow very fast. Unfortunately, it is also a very sensitive plant and any changes to it's environment can slow growth almost to a standstill.

~Salvia sylvestris

Comments: These hybrids should be grown in full sun and a
well-drained soil. The flower spikes are produced during
the summer and some cultivars may require support. The
flowers may be used in fresh or dried arrangements.

~About Salvia extract: 20X SD, for example.
The active principle in S. divinorum is salvinorin A, a furanolactone neoclerodane diterpene.

Extracted matterial from
Salvia divinorum. S. divinorum is a member of the mint family which also includes such familiar herbs as oregano and basil. There are hundreds(>900 spp) of Salvia species, but Salvia divinorum is the only one known to contain the psychoactive diterpenes salvinorin A.

~Salvia chiapensis

California is blessed with a wide variety of native sages ranging from the green leaved, ground hugging Salvia sonomensis to the silver leaved Salvia apiana, and the woody
growing salvia.
The seeds should be planted 2-3 mm (0.08-0.1 inch) deep in a good quality potting mix. So as not to dislodge the seeds, which are tiny and close to the surface, the soil should either be watered from the bottom, or watered using a fine mister. The soil surface should be kept moist, but not soggy.

Growing salvia divinorum
If you will be growing your own Salvia divinorum, you should read this. If you prefer to purchase dried leaves, you can skip this section. Salvia divinorum is a semi-tropical perennial. That means that Salvia divinorum needs a warm humid environment.
Salvia divinorum faq;
This is a FAQ (answers to Frequently Asked Questions) document about Salvia divinorum and its use. It is NOT intended to either  encourage or discourage use of this plant or any pharmacologically active compound.

Salvia divinorum information

The most common method is to smoke Salvia Divinorum in a pipe, without tobacco. The smoke is inhaled fast and deeply. Hold the smoke deeply in the lungs for 20-30 seconds before exhaling, then salvinorin A will absorb into the blood streem.

I have been quite interested in the idea of piggy backing salvia with another drug & so many choose Cannabis. This was in part due to obvious safety but I also had other reasons for this choice.

~Ethnobotany

There are numerous definitions of enthnobotany. The most widely employed and simplest definition explains it as the study of the knowledge and the use of plants in primitive societies in the past and present. The study of
ethnobotanical substances
addresses biodiversity conservation and the promotion of sustained economic development through drug discovery from natural products using ethnobotanical information.

~Ska Maria pastora

There are a number of common names for S. divinorum and nearly all are related to the plant's association with the Virgin Mary. It is known to the Mazatecs as ska MarĂa or ska Pastora. They use it for
shamanism.
A masked shaman might dance to rapid drumming beside a patient's bed at home or a curandera, a traditional Latin American healer, might anoint her patient with oil and pass an egg over the patient.

~An example of medical use of diviner's sage(S. divinorum).

Ms G. is a young Australian woman who has suffered depression since she was a teenager. Her doctor prescribed an antidepressant, but it was ineffective; she tried therapy, but that didn't work, but the use of S. divinorum seemed to help were other things failed.

~Shaman/Curandera(o)

Those who have come to experience the performance gather in the lobby. Lights are low as the scent of incense wafts through the room. A sense of anticipation is heightened by silence. Many of the attendees will wait up for the
Mazatec shaman to arive.

Salvia divinorum is
a hallucinogenic herb traditionally used by Mexico's Mazatec Indians. It has been touted as a legal alternative to marijuana on numerous Web sites. It, however, is nothing like cannabis at all, and I frown on venders that do such.

To the Mazatec indians
Salvia divinorum and its active principle Salvinorin A sacred. Many fear that S. divinorum may be the  next outlawed drugs under federal law. The CCLE is organizing and preparing opposition to HR 5607.

~Hallucinogen

Hallucinogens comprise a unique collection of substances that are ingested to induce alterations of consciousness. A variety of substances with differing chemical structures are known to induce hallucinations when ingested.

~Entheogen

Daily events that boost the immune system (as indicated by levels of salivary immunoglobulin A), some instances of spontaneous remission, and mystical experiences seem to share a similar cluster of thoughts, feelings..
divinorum
You can smoke it, chew it or boil it to make tea. And it can make you feel as though you are flying through space - or it can knock one down onto the ground.

Salvias have hollow, square stems with winged edges. The stems are not very sturdy, but with support, the plant can grow to eight feet tall. Filtered sunlight is best, and tS. divinorum likes plenty of water and humidity. It rarely sets seed.

Sages, Salvias, truly drought tolerant California Native plants.

Source site here;

http://www.laspilitas.com/garden/sages.htm

Sages, Salvias, truly drought tolerant California Native plants.
Depending on the flora there are 17 or 18 sages native to California. In California, the sages are visited by hummingbirds, bumblebees, wasps and bees. (Hummingbirds kill for sages. They defend the sages in their territory like they are the only water in the desert.) Sages are native in California along the coastal areas, parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains and into the upper desert.(The Creeping Sage, can sometimes be found in the lower elevations of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.) In much of central California Black Sage, Salvia mellifera, sometimes grows along the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. In areas like Los Angeles and San Diego, as much as a third of the vegetation may have been sages mixed with oaks (Quercus spp.), Toyons (Heteromeles arbutifolia), Mountain lilac (Ceanothus spp.), California sagebrush (Artemisia californica) and Rhus species. Sages can live for 30 or more years and are very drought tolerant. We have a few on the nursery property that were mature 23 years ago and are still living, even in a bad drought.

California native sage species, subspecies, varieties and cultivars.
Salvia apiana,White sage
White Sage (Salvia apiana) is used as a smudge stick by many upscale white folks while whole hillsides are ripped out of the ground in California. The 'sticks'(whole bushes, roots and all) are stuffed into old, dirty Chevy, Dodge and Ford Vans and driven to New York, Portland and other far away places. White sage has been killed out of many areas of California by this practice. The main pollinators for White Sage are the humble bumblebee and small native wasps. These guys are hard little workers that bother no one but whose nectar sources have been replaced in California with weeds. They'll fly into the flower face and then crawl into the flower's neck and sip the nectar.(I've only been stung once by a bumble, I sat on him accidentally. The flower wasps are similar, no problem unless you start to smash one, then wow! They hurt! If it didn't hurt so much they'd be cute walking around grumbling (they actually swing their head back and forth like they're cursing) that they had to sting you because you're big, blind and stupid for not seeing them. White sage is a stunner if you place it in amongst a series of greens like Dwarf Coyote Brush, or in front of a rock wall with a bench in front of it where people can watch the humble bumble at work.
Salvia apiana compacta, Compact White Sage
This compact white sage looks a lot like regular white sage but it is smaller and neater. It has the same chalky white foliage and clean white flowers.

Salvia brandegei, Brandegees Sage
Island Black Sage is a wonderful form of Black Sage that grows on the islands off the coast of southern California. A kind of sprawling perennial that grows to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The deep cobalt blue flowers are well liked by hummingbirds and butterflies. It has proven hardy to 10 degrees F and tolerant of clay or sand. Mix with Diplacus species., Salvia 'Gracias' and Penstemons for a showy hummingbird garden. Island black sage is fairly drought tolerant and can survive in most gardens with no water after the first year.

Salvia carduacea, Thistle Sage

Thistle Sage, Salvia carduacea, is an annual that is not available in the trade but some of you no doubt are curious as to what it looks like. It grows along the inside of the coast ranges and makes a stunning show some years covering acres in brilliant pink.

Salvia clevelandii, Alpine Cleveland sage or Musk Sage
This is a from of Cleveland sage that was found weer the town of alpine in southern California. It has large blue flowers and is very floriferous. It is loved by hummingbirds. Alpine Cleveland sage is also very drought tolerant.

Salvia clevelandii, Winifred Gilman Cleveland or Musk Sage
The most fragrant of the native sages is probably Cleveland or Musk Sage, Salvia clevelandii. The deep sky blue flowers send up fireworks about the Fourth of July and last well into August attracting a crowd of party -going beneficial insects. Musk sage grows near the coast in San Diego and inland to the edge of the Anza Borrego desert. You can sometimes find it growing on nasty, south facing rocky slopes that look like an old B western, or like Afghanistan does now. You couldn't plant these slopes because there's no soil, only rock. In clay, Musk Sage is a very short lived perennial. In beach sand it is wonderful, long lived and carefree. Cleveland sage looks good and flowers in areas that may only receive 5-7 inches of rainfall. It is a very drought tolerant plant.

Salvia columbariae, Chia
Chia (Salvia Columbariae) is a lovely, annual sage that makes a great pet (ha ha chia pet) or a decent wildflower show on gravelly sandy soils. The seeds were eaten by the indigenous California people. It can be found in clean areas between the chaparral. The leaves are deeply dissected and very crinkly.

Salvia dorrii, Desert Sage

Desert sage is one tough desert-edge plant. It grows along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains from Lassen county to just Victorville area and east to Nevada in gravelly washes and rocky outcrops. This sage only grows to 2 or 3 feet but can stop traffic when it's in flower. It will die in most watered gardens, in clay, or with much winter rain, abuse it with drought and sun, and it will thrive.

It is know to be a mild hallucinogen when smoked.

Salvia leucophylla Purple Sage
Purple sage is the largest sage native to California, can reach 6 feet in height in the wild. In the garden do not give it much water, as it can grow into an eight foot tumble weed. Purple sage grows from Santa Maria south. Its crinkly gray foliage is almost white. Purple sage's flowers are a soft violet spiral that look like a landing towers for hummingbirds and native insects. Purple Sage likes a clay or loamy soil. It will grow in sand, but not at its best. Use in the back of a native planting or sage garden and as a contrast plant. Along the coast it is a satisfactory bluff plant.

Salvia leucophylla, Pt. Sal
Pt. Sal is suppose to be a low growing version of purple sage. However in our experience it is a monster. The flowers are purplish-pink and it has gray foliage

Salvia mellifera, Black Sage

Black sage grows along the coastal areas of California from San Diego up to about San Francisco. The fragrance is different from Musk Sage, in that Black Sage screams CHAPARRAL when you brush it. Hummingbirds, small native flies and butterflies like the flowers. Quail and small birds like the seeds. Black Sage is a dominant plant in its range. This sage grows in sand in Los Osos, clay in San Luis Obispo, under redwoods in Santa Cruz, and mixed with junipers in the Temblor mountain range. This is a very long lived, stable sage that looks good most all of the year.
Salvia mellifera repens, Creeping Black Sage
This is a low growing black sage, one of several forms and varieties out there. The varieties that we have seen are all much lower and more spreading than Black Sage and definitely more frost sensitive. They would do well in areas where height is a problem, as in obscuring a view. Black Sage and the other sages of California have been little used in cooking but each one has its own special fragrance and most people burn the wood with oak wood in the barbecue to flavor the meat in that way.

Salvia munzii, San Diego Sage
Munz's Sage grows right at the Mexican border in a real badlands of drought, sun, and wind. This sage will go deciduous in its normal range in late summer, making it probably the most drought tolerant of the garden tolerant sages. In a garden it is a cute little perennial sub-shrub with blue flowers. It looks so delicate in the garden, yet its habitat is awfully hot and dry. Hard chaparral, with about 7 inches of rainfall, temperatures in the low 100's, and INS agents everywhere. If it's a extreme drought, don't water and it should live, losing it's leaves to survive, do water and it will look lush.

Salvia munzii grows on this barren hillside!

Salvia pachyphylla, Mountain Desert Sage
Mountain Desert sage (Salvia pachyphylla), is the queen of California sages. The flowers are elegant, showy on a very clean, smooth plant. Some years the flowers are almost as big as the plant! Fragrance is not as good as Musk Sage, but the flowers are pink and lavender with hints of blue. The foliage on Mountain desert sage is as white as white sage but more neat and the plant more compact with stunning flowers. Mountain desert sage can be grown in most gardens as long as you keep it dry after the first year. Sneak out and water in the summer and this drought loving plant will probably die.

Salvia sonomensis, Creeping Sage
Creeping Sage (Salvia sonomensis) is a trailing groundcover that lives in the more mesic chaparral edges and along the edges of the yellow pine forest. Creeping Sage commonly grows in clay that is very wet in winter, but dry in summer. Occasionally a summer shower will wash the foliage off, but the ground stays dry. If you wish to grow Creeping Sage water it once every 2 weeks for the first year, then one or two waterings extra in spring, along with 2-3 summer dust wash-offs. We discovered Salvia 'Gracias' a few years ago. It is a hybrid between Creeping Sage and Musk Sage. 'Gracias' is much more stable than either species with the form of Creeping, and the flowers of Musk. Beautiful, and much better for most gardens. Gracias is very drought tolerant, Salvia sonomensis is drought tolerant in it's range, everywhere else it's a whimp.

Salvia sonomensis, Farmar-Bower or Golden Creeping Sage
This is a yellow-white flowered version of creeping sage. It dose great in clay soil.

Salvia spathacea, Hummingbird Sage
Hummingbird sage is a groundcover usually found under oaks, but may also grows in sunny areas in chaparral. Under Coast Live Oaks, Quercus agrifolia, Hummingbird Sage can cover areas 100 feet across forming a solid mat of large deep green leaves followed by magenta flowers staked out by resident hummingbirds. Hummingbird Sage has been very effective on coastal bluffs. It can tolerate full sun along the coast, long drought and tolerates full salt spray. Plant it beside a rock and watch it grow! Hummingbird Sage also likes extra spring water and summer wash-offs.
Here are some varieties we have:
Salvia spathacea, Powerline or Pink Giant Hummbingbird Sage
Salvia spathacea, Topanga or Los Angeles Hummingbird Sage
Salvia spathecea, Las Pilitas Hummingbird Sage

California Sage hybrids
These sages are hybrids between native species in California. Some are naturally accruing others were developed in gardens. These are some of the most beautiful sages but many are also shorter lived than their parents and not as stable. These are very popular with birds and butterflies. The plants must be similar enough to their wild parents for the wildlife to know what to do with them.

Salvia Celestial Blue
'Celestial Blue' is a hybrid of Salvia clevelandii, Salvia pachyphylla and Salvia leucophylla. It is hardy to 0 degrees F, drought tolerant, heat tolerant and it seems, even garden tolerant. The flowers start appearing in May and hold until the first weeks of July. The foliage smells as Musk Sage but is smooth and not nearly as folded and crinkly as either Salvia clevelandii or S. leucophylla. (Las Pilitas Nursery introduction: 1999). We planted some in an area where everything else has died of drought(we do not cuddle our plants), the plants have done fine and flowered with no water, other than a dust down once. (Felt sorry for the dirt covered plant.)

Salvia Pozo Blue, ' Salvia clevelandii X leucophylla
'Pozo Blue' is a hybrid between Purple Sage and Cleveland Sage. 'Pozo' grows to about 4 feet. high, and 5 feet wide and has the flowers and fragrance of Musk sage but is hardy to 0 F. like Purple Sage. 'Pozo Blue' tolerates and even thrives in sand or clay, coastal, mountain or desert gardens. It also has proven to be VERY drought tolerant. We, that is Las Pilitas Nursery, introduced it in 1989. The original plants are 13 years old with no water. They survive dry hot summers and drought and are still a mass of flowers in July. Where this one is planted most of the 'drought tolerant' plants in the trade would fry in a few hours, (it's very toasty). Cal Trans has used these along some of the 101 roadsides, planted and water in once and it did fine with no further irrigation. Pozo Blue is really showy and forms a nice round shrub. It is especially popular with California Quail, hummingbirds, and lots of butterflies including the California Dog Face.

Salvia Bee's Bliss
Bee's Bliss looks a lot like Salvia gracias. We don't know much about it.

Salvia bernardina X
This strange sage is a hybrid between Salvia mellifera, Black sage and Salvia columbariae, Chia. It can often be seen after fires. It is a shrubby perennial similar in form to Black sage. The flowers are blue and resemble Chia flowers.

Salvia Carl Nielsen

We don't know much about this sage but it has really pretty flowers.

Salvia 'Dara's Choice'
'Dara's Choice' is a hybrid between Salvia mellifera and something else, maybe Salvia sonomensis. It has green foliage and a decent blue flower. The growth rate is exceptional. As a ground cover, Dara's Choice can cover 50 square feet in 4 months. It was created by Dara Emery at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in the 1970's. Not drought tolerant except near the coast.

Salvia 'Gracias' clevelandii X sonomenis
Salvia 'Gracias' has gray-green foliage and pale purple flowers. It is very low growing only about 6 inches to a foot tall. It makes an excellent ground cover. It tolerates dry climates the way a species would. It survived in our demonstration garden on 12 inches of rainfall in full sun with temperatures regularly exceeding 100 degrees F. It is great for covering up retaining walls or stabilizing rock walls. It drapes gracefully down the face of the wall and can tolerate reflected heat off the wall. We have used it in very high deer areas and it has been ignored by them. It attracts lots of butterflies and hummingbirds.

Salvia Mrs. Beard

Mrs. Beard is a low growing sage. It has greener foliage than 'Gracias' and has light blue flowers. We don't know much more about it.

Pitcher sages

These aren't real sages but they are related. They are fragrant and have large flowers.
Lepechinia calycina, California Pitcher sage
California pitcher sage grows about 3 ft tall and about the same wide. Under stress it will go summer deciduous. It can tolerate very hot dry climates and cold winter temperatures. It likes full sun but can tolerate part shade. The flowers are large and light purple. The foliage is very fragrant. This pitcher sage likes well drained soil.

Lepechinia fragrans, Wallaces Pitcher sage
Wallace's pitcher sage is a little bit softer than California pitcher sage as it comes from more coastal climates. It can tolerate temperatures in the teens. It has purplish pink flowers a little darker than California pitcher sage. It likes little part shade in the interior. Although it does better with a little moisture. It made it through our 110 degree F. summer on only 12 inches of rainfall in our demonstration garden. It just went summer deciduous. Wallace's Pitcher sage has fragrant foliage.

Lepechinia ganderi, San Diego Pitcher sage
San Diego pitcher sage looks a lot different from the other to mentioned here. The foliage is more shiny , not so hairy, and darker green with purplish stems and tints of purple in the foliage. The flowers aren't so elongated with smaller less prominent sepals. It the most elegant of the three. It likes rock soils. It is real happy in a rock garden or with a large rock next to it.

Other stinky things that are also called sages but are not.
Artemisia californica, California Sagebrush
California Sagebrush has soft, fragrant, gray foliage. It grows around 3 feet tall. California Sagebrush is happiest along the coast in mild climates. It has feathery foliage.

Artemisia californica, Canyon Grey Trailing Sagebrush
Canyon gray sage brush is a California sagebrush that stays only about a foot tall. It has the same feathery gray foliage and fragrance as the regular California sagebrush. It will tolerate serpentine and clay soils as well as well drained soils.

Artemisia californica X Montara
Artemisia californica X Montara is another low growing Artemisia. It is a naturally occurring hybrid between Artemisia californica and Artemisia pycnocephala. It reaches only about a foot tall. Montara tolerates sea side conditions, clay, and serpentine soil.

Artemisia tridentata, Great Basin Sagebrush
Great Basin Sagebrush has larger leaves but the same gray foliage and fragrance. It is found in large portions of very dry areas in northern and central California. It is a little more substantial than California sage brush. It is about 4 feet tall. Great basin sagebrush likes sandy well drained soil.
